The 13th Michigan Infantry organized on January 17, 1862 at Kalamazoo, Michigan. Initially attached to the Army of the Ohio, and later transferred to the Army of the Cumberland.

It fought in the Battles of Shiloh, Perryville, Stones River, Chickamauga, and Chattanooga, and the sieges of Corinth and Chattanooga.  It joined Sherman’s March to the Sea and was present at Johnston’s surrender.  The unit marched in the Grand Review at the end of the War, and mustered out of service at Louisville, Kentucky, on July 25, 1865.
